Farmland Preservation
Program
The Wisconsin Farmland Preservation Program (FLP) provides state income
tax credits to farmers who meet the program’s requirements. Program requirements include meeting the
soil and water conservation standards, and using the land for agriculture only.
To be eligible for the Farmland Preservation Program, the landowner
must be a Wisconsin resident and own a parcel of land that is 35 acres or
more. The land must produce farm
profits of $6,000 in the last year or $18,000 over the last 3 years, or have 35
acres or more enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP).
No public access to the land is required. The agreement transfers with the land when the ownership
changes. Agreement length is 10 to 25
years.
The amount of tax credit a producer receives is based on household
income. The lower the household income
is compared to property taxes, the more credit a producer will receive. Households with incomes that are too high
for the formula credit are eligible for a minimum credit of 10% of their
property taxes. The maximum amount of
property taxes eligible for the 10% credit si $6,000.
