Introduction To Northwest Coast Native American Art}

Submitted by: Clint Leung

I had lived in Vancouver very briefly as a child and it was during that time when I was first exposed to the art of the Northwest Coast Native American Indians. It was the towering colorful totem poles out in Stanley Park that everyone gazed at with wonder and appreciation. It took about 30 years later during a return trip to Vancouver when Northwest Coast Native American art caught my eyes again.

I was in Vancouver for business and landed at the city’s new airport terminal. One could not help but notice the huge native carvings near the arrivals area. Later on during my stay, I decided to wander around in the Gastown district. It was in these shops and galleries in Gastown where I fell in love with Northwest Coast Native American art. I saw many wonderful wooden plaques representing different animals. There were also art prints, paintings, masks, wooden bowls and even furnature with these animals either painted or carved right into the pieces.

The colors and designs, which might be considered a bit exaggerated to non-native eyes, were striking as well as bold. I knew at that time that I wanted to include some of this magnificent artwork on my walls back at home. So I bought two plaque carvings and carried them home like newly found treasure.

Historically, the native Indians who lived along the river valleys and coastal waters of the Pacific Northwest were all hunters and gatherers. The region was blessed with abundant resources from both the seas and forests. These people captured in their artwork the animals they hunted and observed. These included bears, killer whales, eagles, ravens, salmons, wolves, hummingbirds and even frogs. Chiefs and mythical characters important in their legends such as thunderbirds were also included as art subjects.

Northwest Coast Native American art is just only recently gaining some major attention in some galleries and museums around the world. Compared to other native arts such as Inuit (Eskimo), exposure of Northwest Coast Native American art is still rather limited to the northwest coast of Canada and the United States. This form of artwork is virtually unknown to most parts of the world including many regions of North America. This will hopefully change as more people from around the world travel to Vancouver. The future winter Olympics in 2010 up in Whistler, BC will also have a positive impact on the region’s Native Indian art. I personally believe that Northwest Coast Native American art has a lot of potential to be internationally recognized and accepted.

200 candles: Chileans celebrate country’s Bicentennial

Saturday, September 18, 2010

Chile is celebrating its Bicentennial, with several events that have been organized by the government for almost a decade. It commemorates two hundred years since the First Government Junta of 1810 was formed, starting the Independence process, that ended in 1818 after Bernardo O’Higgins proclaimed it.

The Bicentennial takes place on a holiday from September 17th until 21st. Sebastián Piñera inaugurated the official fondas (places where typical food and drinks of Chile are sold; similar to a tavern) earlier on Friday. Piñera also danced a “pie” of Cueca, Chile’s national dance, with Government Spokeswoman Ena Von Baer.

More than 60 thousand people gathered on Plaza de la Ciudadanía (Citizen’s Square) in Santiago to celebrate the Bicentennial. There was a projection of historical images that also contained a message from the trapped miners in Copiapó. A giant flag of Chile (18 meters of height, 27 of width; weighing 200 kilograms) was raised on the square on Friday morning.

Celebrations of the Bicentennial in Pichilemu started earlier this month. On September 2, two thousand people lined up in a formation to create the message “Viva Chile Bicentenario Cardenal Caro” on Pichilemu beach “Las Terrazas”. The message was used to create a postal stamp to be released worldwide. The event was promoted by the Government of Cardenal Caro Province.

Private schools in the city, such as Colegio Preciosa Sangre, prepared events specially for their students. On Thursday, “Fonda Don Vicente Nario” was opened on Preciosa Sangre. Several games were performed there on that morning, including “el emboque”, “ponerle la cola al burro” (to put the tail to the donkey), and others.

Another event on Preciosa Sangre took place on Thursday night, when students recreated scenes of the History of Chile, including: a tertulia featuring Manuel Montt (starred by Luis Rojas); a chingana (a popular tavern); and selected colonial professions, such as the “motero” (person who sold motemei and chestnuts).

The official fonda of Pichilemu, La Bombonera, was inaugurated on Thursday night by Mayor Roberto Córdova, who danced cueca with people who attended the event. According to Córdova, at least 30,000 people have arrived at Pichilemu as of Friday, and it is estimated that another 30,000 will arrive during the next three days.

A great event took place on Pichilemu beach on Friday afternoon. Chilean typical games highlighted the event. People danced reggaeton, Américo’s cumbias and cuecas, while others were swimming. The National Shoe Fair (Feria Nacional del Calzado) was established on Agustín Ross Hotel on Thursday, and will stay in the town until September 23rd. Alicia Grez, who works on a kiosk in the Pichileminian Craft Fair located in front of One Discotheque, said that “sales have been excellent,” and that “[they] won’t miss the possibility to experience such an event like this.”

Thai Queen attends protester cremation as report indicates explosive tear gas used

Tuesday, October 14, 2008

With the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) having called off Monday’s demonstration and march on Bangkok‘s police headquarters, Thailand’s Queen Sirikit (Thai: ????????????????????????? ???????????????) and HRH Princess Chulabhorn Valayalaksana (Thai: ??????????????????? ???????????????????????? ?????????????) attended the cremation and funeral of Angkana Radubpanyawoot, one of the protesters killed in clashes between police and PAD protesters last Tuesday.

The queen, consort of the highly popular and revered eighty-year old Thai monarch Bhumibol Adulyadej (Thai: ??????????????), was joined by police chiefs, leaders of the PAD movement, and many protesters. Presiding over the ceremonies, the queen was accompanied by army chief Anupong Paojinda (Thai: ??????? ?????????), the opposition Democrat party leader, Abhisit Vejjajiva (Thai: ????????? ?????????), and newly elected Bangkok Governor, Apirak Kosayodhin (Thai: ???????? ?????????). Founder and de-facto head of the People’s Alliance for Democracy movement, Sondhi Limthongkul (Thai: ???? ??????????) attended as the protest group’s representative, along with thousands of others mainly from the PAD.

Queen Sirikit spoke with Angkhana’s father, Jinda Radappanyawut during the Buddhist cremation ceremony. He later discussed their conversation, detailing that the queen had given moral support and said that his daughter was a decent person who had been helping the King and working for the good of the nation. Jinda’s wife, Angkhana’s mother, was not present at the funeral; she continues to be treated for injuries sustained during the protest outside parliament. The Bangkok Post report detailing this meeting mentions that the king has donated funds to help those injured in the police clampdown.

At the closing of the funeral services there were scuffles between PAD protesters and the Army’s Commander-in-Chief, Anupong Paojinda, as he attempted to leave. Security guards had to assist him in reaching his car and protesters banged on the car as it drove away.

Should Thailand’s monarchy involve itself in the political situation like this?
Add or view comments

With a sub-committee appointed by the country’s Human Rights Commission due to report within the week, details are beginning to emerge accounting for the number of injuries and severity of some in last Tuesday’s clashes outside parliament. Nearly 500 were injured as police employed tear gas to try and disperse the crowd of PAD protesters blockading parliament. The group, originally formed seeking to topple deposed former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his Thai Rak Thai party, had disbanded in September 2006 following Thaksin being removed by a coup. The 2007 general election saw them reform to oppose the new government formed by the People’s Power Party (PPP) who are widely regarded as a proxy for the ex-PM living in exile in the UK. The PAD protest aimed to stop the PPP government from announcing their legislative programme which included measures to amend the constitution and rehabilitate Thaksin and others from the now-outlawed Thai Rak Thai party. Investigations started during the coup period leave Thaksin and others accused of vote buying and electoral fraud.

Porntip Rojanasunan, the director of Thailand’s Central Institute of Forensic Science has indicated that the tear gas employed was likely responsible for the many injuries during the October 7 crackdown. A number of the canisters were found to contain RDX, a militarily employed explosive. RDX is considered a powerful explosive and the quantities likely involved would have left craters. Other types of tear gas were employed, manufactured in the United States and Spain, but during the protest it was the RDX-laced variety which originated in China that had been favoured. Porntip’s agency demonstrated the firing of these tear gas canisters from a shotgun to the Human Rights Commission committee on Sunday, noting that one exploded canister “left a hole in a metal pipe”. It is claimed that the lethal tear gas was sourced from a third party and not directly from China.

Along with the two fatalities, fifteen people remain hospitalised from last week’s police action, with one critically injured having lost his right arm.

Monday’s planned PAD protest and march on Bangkok police HQ was cancelled to allow people to attend the cremation and funeral services for the two dead. No new date for the protest has been announced.

Millions march in France and around the world in support of Charlie Hebdo

Monday, January 12, 2015

Following the shootings at the offices of Charlie Hebdo, millions of people turned out yesterday for marches in Paris, in cities across France, and around the world. Reported estimates of between 1.5 and 2 million people rallied in Paris, and the French interior ministry estimated 3.7 million or more rallied across France.

44 world leaders attended the Paris march including French President François Hollande; German Chancellor Angela Merkel; British Prime Minister David Cameron; Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy; Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi; the President of Mali, Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta; Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu; Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority; King Abdullah II and Queen Rania of Jordan; Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu; the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov; the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban; and the President of Gabon, Ali Bongo Ondimba.

US Ambassador to France Jane D. Hartley attended. White House Spokesman Josh Earnest responded to criticism for not sending a higher level representative on behalf of the United States: “It is fair to say we should have sent someone with a higher profile.” Earnest said the rally had been planned on Friday and President Obama attending the rally on such short notice presented “significant security challenges”. Secretary of State John Kerry said he already had a prior engagement in India.

Charlie Hebdo has previously published cartoons featuring the Islamic prophet Muhammed. These include original depictions and reprints of controversial cartoons originally by Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten. Some of these cartoons were on display at the marches.

Internet Marketing With Pay Per Click And Banners Advertising}

Submitted by: Juan Heid

We all know that pay per click or PPC advertising is the best way to go when promoting products in affiliate marketing business. As an advertisers have only two ways to go, first is to build their own website from which to promote their offers and use search engines or social media sites to advertise, or secondly to use alternative ways of promotion which are based on banner placing on so called publisher websites. pay per click networks First method has its own good and bad sides while the second can be very efficient in achieving the goal of selling affiliated products or promoting your own website. is a PPC advertising network which can be a perfect replacement for search engine or social media sites advertising.

YouTube Preview Image

What is the main advantage of advertising at publishers websites? In short, when advertising in this way you will be placing a banner to a website which has already established itself in search engines either by promoting there or by using social media websites. Those places have traffic which is in a certain way already filtered by search engine results. Visitors that come from different sources to the publishers, they are most likely following them or probably come either from search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing etc.) or from social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest etc.). With this in mind it’s not hard imagining what kind of traffic you can buy from publishers. In other words, instead of paying for traffic by advertising in search engines yourself, all you have to do is put a banner with the link that redirect this filtered traffic towards you.

What are the advertising costs with SupportingAds PPC system? While it’s not hard to figure out the cost of search engines PPC advertising because it’s based on keywords, doing the same thing with this network is a lot cheaper simply because it isn’t based on the above mentioned method – there are no keywords or competition attached to them. With you will be creating advertising campaigns by writing the text, adding a picture and selecting the category for your own website or the product you are promoting. Because the likelihood of having the same text as someone else already using this network to advertise is almost nonexistent, chance of having any competition is also equal to zero.

Next logical question about SupportingAds would be – what can I promote here? The shortest answer would be anything you want. This network allows for direct link advertising which means that affiliate marketers can attach their sale links to banners they create. If you have your own website you can redirect traffic there, either to your front or any other page – blog post, squeeze or landing page etc. buy cheap Traffic You can use this to generate traffic and increase your own website ratings, you can use it to collect emails or you can send visitors directly to the sales pages. When analyzing results of advertising campaigns you can use external URL shortener for your links in order to have better insight in their effectiveness, and then delete or adjust those that are not giving you expected results.

The whole beauty of using this system to advertise lies in the fact that by creating a text for your ads you can find perfect pages among publishing websites that will give you optimal quality of traffic you are paying for. SupportingAds system analyzes text from ads and contextually matches it with the content from the publishing websites and by doing so it finds a perfectly matching page where to place your banner. You can never get this kind of results by using search engine or social networks PPC system of advertising.

Russian firefighting aircraft starts fires in Portugal

Saturday, July 8, 2006

The Russian Beriev 200 airplane leased to the Portuguese Government suffered an accident last Thursday (July 6) afternoon, after one of its engines was damaged.

The accident occurred after a refueling operation at the dam of Aguieira, near Santa Comba Dão. As the aerial firefighting aircraft took off at the end of the refueling maneuver in the water – designated as ‘scooping’ – its “left wing hit the top of the trees and the aircraft suffered some damage” to its fuselage, said Colonel Anacleto dos Santos, director of the Cabinet of Prevention and Investigation of Accidents with Aircraft (GPIAA), to the Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã.

While hitting the top of the trees, leaves and some wood entered the left engine, which didn’t blow up, but that had to be turned off and the pilot was forced to release fuel for safety reasons. The release of the fuel started small wildfires across the area, reaching some houses, which were quickly extinguished by firefighters and helitack units of the GNR‘s Intervention, Protection and Rescue Group.

The airplane was able to do an emergency landing at the Monte Real Air Base, where it’s currently operating from, thanks to the flight experience of one of the Russian pilots. When contacted by the Lusa news agency, National Service of Firefighters and Civil Protection, vice-president Lieutenant-Colonel Joaquim Leitão explained that the repairs will be made by the aircraft company and that all the parts necessary to repair the damages will have to come from Russia, by which the solution for the problem will take “some days”.

Lieutenant-Colonel Leitão added that an investigation is in progress to analyse the circumstances under which the accident occurred. And when he was asked if the accident was caused by the limitations of the dam, given the dimensions of the aircraft, he said that the reconnaissance of the area had been performed before the scooping exercises began, and an operation officially kicks off when all the conditions are met.

The final report of the GPIAA will only be concluded in a few weeks but GPIAA director, Colonel Anacleto dos Santos, excluded two of the eventual causes of any aerial accident. “The atmospheric conditions were not adverse and there are no indications of mechanical failure. Everything points to human error.”

On board of the aircraft followed two Russian pilots – one of them still receiving formation – and an Portuguese pilot that was observing the operations.

Two years ago, the Italian authorities tested the Beriev in the same mission type. Having the Portuguese Government sent observers to evaluate the performance of the aircraft. However, some limitations were found in the performing of the Russian aircraft in Italy’s wildfire scenarios. Having the Italian Civil Protection reached the conclusion that the Beriev 200 is not prepared to operate in mountainous terrain. to acquire Whole Foods at US$42 per share

Saturday, June 17, 2017

Yesterday, e-commerce giant announced they are to acquire Texas based retail grocery store chain Whole Foods Market at US$42 per share. According to the deal worth US$13.7 billion (£10.7 billion) the retail grocery store chain is to keep the Whole Foods Market brand name and John Mackey is reportedly to remain its CEO.

After the announcement, Amazon’s shares went up more than two percent and Whole Foods Market shares went up by about 28%. Shares of other grocery-selling chains like Kroger, Target, Sprouts Farmers and Costco experienced a dip after the announcement.

Amazon runs their own online grocery — Amazon Fresh — which started a decade ago in Seattle, Washington. Amazon’s? CEO Jeff Bezos said, “Millions of people love Whole Foods Market because they offer the best natural and organic foods, and they make it fun to eat healthy.”

Whole Foods Market started in 1978, and employs about 87000 people in its roughly 460 stores across the US, UK and Canada. The deal is expected to cover debts of Whole Foods Market.

Whole Foods Market CEO Mackey said, “This partnership presents an opportunity to maximize value for Whole Foods Market’s shareholders, while at the same time extending our mission and bringing the highest quality, experience, convenience and innovation to our customers.”

The acquisition, which has not yet received approval from the shareholders of Whole Foods Market, adds a 27% premium to Thursday’s closing value of its stock. This would be Amazon’s largest acquisition if the deal is done.

USPTO partially confirms validity of Amazon “1-click patent”

Tuesday, October 9, 2007

Today, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) issued an office action, which confirmed the patentability of claims 6 to 10 of the Amazon 1-Click patent, US 5,960,411. The patent examiner, however, rejected claims 1 to 5 and 11 to 15. Amazon now has up to six months to amend the rejected claims to overcome the examiner’s rejection, provide arguments to demonstrate that the examiner is in error and/or provide evidence to demonstrate the patentability of their claims. During this period, the entire patent is still considered valid under US patent law.

The USPTO is reconsidering the patentability of the claims due to a request for reexamination filed by New Zealander Peter Calveley. Mr. Calveley used internet archives to show that defunct company Digi Cash used a similar technique prior to Amazon. Despite costing a substantial sum of cash and requiring donations to prepare and file the request for reexamination, Calveley said he did it as a game and hopes that his success inspires others to play the same game.

“One Click” shopping is an ecommerce technique, which allows a customer to purchase products via the Internet without repeatedly entering personal information such as name and address. At the time it was introduced it eased the frustration of on-line shopping.

Amazon filed the patent application for 1-click shopping in early 1997 and was granted the patent in September 1999. 23 days later Amazon sued rival Barnes & Noble for alleged infringement by its “Express Lane” ordering which was introduced in 1998. In December 1999 Amazon won an interim injunction against Barnes & Noble but the USA Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit lifted this injunction in February 2001. The parties then settled their dispute for undisclosed terms. Amazon has since successfully licensed the technique to other e-sellers such as Apple.

Subprime Lenders: Find Financing With A Bad Credit History

See More About:

By Carrie Reeder

Subprime lenders finance high risk groups to enable them to buy a home. While you need to be aware of predatory lending practice, by researching lenders you can find a mortgage loan at a reasonable rate.

Bad Credit Factors

Before you sign up with a subprime lender, be sure that you truly have bad credit. There are five factors that determine your credit score: payment history, credit history, amount owed, types of credit, and new credit. Each of these factors are weighted differently, so a series of late payments on one account may be offset by low debt, no new credit inquires, and other factors.

A FICO score less than 570 will require you to use a subprime lender. However, you may be able to still use a traditional mortgage lender by providing a large down payment, qualifying you for lower interest rates.

YouTube Preview Image

Subprime Financing Versus Predatory Lenders

Subprime lenders offer genuine financing so you can purchase your home and repay your loan. Predatory lenders seek to strip your home equity, charge excessive interest rate, and foreclose on your home.

Predatory lenders will often list their site on public forums in an effort to lure unsuspecting victims. They will also make claims that they are the only ones who will lend to you or that they can fix all your credit problems. Also, beware of lenders that insist you work with a particular contractor or real estate agent.

Finding A Good Subprime Lender

To find a good subprime lender, use an online mortgage broker who will give you quotes from several different lenders. Compare rates and fees to see which are the most reasonable. Also ask lenders if they are approved by HUD. With poor credit, you may qualify for government mortgage insurance.

You should also determine what you can afford to pay monthly and not feel pressured to borrow more than that. If you are concerned about monthly payments, look at an adjustable rate mortgage (ARM), which offers low interest rates initially. An ARM is also easier to qualify for. However, a fixed rate mortgage offers long term predictability on how much your monthly payments will be.

Department of Defense report lambasts communication failure in US War on Terror

Monday, December 20, 2004

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A U.S. Department of Defense advisory committee has released a report harshly criticizing the U.S.-led “[[War on Terror]]”. The report details communication failures with the Muslim world, and notes that current efforts may have achieved the opposite of their intended effect.

The report released without publicity the Wednesday before Thanksgiving by Defense Science Board, focuses on a failure of communication, which the Defense Science Board considers vital to the war on terror. It asserts this failure of “strategic communication” contributes to a perceived “negative image in world opinion and diminished ability to persuade” of the United States, and that a resulting atmosphere of hostility can manifest in numerous ways.

The list of harmful effects includes “terrorism, thin coalitions, harmful effects on business, restrictions on travel, declines in cross border tourism and education flows, and damaging consequences for other elements of U.S. soft power”.

According to the report, “The information campaign … is an essential objective, because the larger goals of U.S. strategy depend on separating the vast majority of non-violent Muslims from the radical-militant Islamist-Jihadists. But American efforts have not only failed in this respect: they may also have achieved the opposite of what they intended.”

By way of example, the report quotes figures from a June 2004 Zogby poll, claiming to show a significant drop in Arab support for the U.S. in the past couple years. Statistical results are reproduced below.

Country June 2004Favorable/Unfavorable April 2002Favorable/Unfavorable
Morocco 11/88 38/61
Saudi Arabia 4/94 12/87
Jordan 15/78 34/61
Lebanon 20/69 26/70
UAE 14/73 11/87
Egypt 2/98 15/76

The report further claims, “American direct intervention in the Muslim World has paradoxically elevated the stature of and support for radical Islamists.” As summarised in a Christian Science Monitor headline, ‘They hate our policies, not our freedom’.

So why has support for the U.S. dropped? — to single digits in some Arab nations. President Bush and others have famously claimed that America is hated for its freedom. But the Defense Science Board concluded that most Arabs “do not hate us for our values, but because of our policies.” From the same Zogby study:

MoroccoFav/Unfav Saudi ArabiaFav/Unfav JordanFav/Unfav LebanonFav/Unfav UAEFav/Unfav
Science / Technology 90/8 48/51 83/13 52/46 84/12

Policy on Terrorism 13/82 2/96 21/75 10/84 9/84
Iraq Policy 1/98 1/97 2/78 4/93 4/91

This study explains that while support for American values may not be overwhelming, it is practically non-existent for America’s policies in the Middle East.

“The overwhelming majority voice their objections to what they see as one-sided support in favor of Israel and against Palestinian rights, and the longstanding, even increasing support for what Muslims collectively see as tyrannies, most notably Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Pakistan, and the Gulf states. Thus when American public diplomacy talks about bringing democracy to Islamic societies, this is seen as no more than self-serving hypocrisy.”

In the eyes of Muslims, according to this report, America is really only looking out for its own interests.

It concludes from this that the fundamental problem with relations with the Muslim world is not a simple matter of crafting the right message. “Rather, it is a fundamental problem of credibility. Simply, there is none.”
