Dead children found in car in Sussex, UK

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

The bodies of two children were found this morning in a car in Heathfield, East Sussex, in the United Kingdom. A 43-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of the murders.

The boy and girl were both less than five years old, and were discovered at 11:46 this morning (GMT) when Sussex police officers forced their way into the vehicle, which was parked on Mill Close in Heathfield. The woman, who has yet to be identified, had visited Heathfield police station earlier this morning to report “an incident”, and was later arrested on suspicion of murder. The police say that they have identified the bodies. The identities will be revealed when the post mortem examinations take place, which is scheduled for next Thursday.

I would like to reassure people that it is fully contained and there is no threat to anyone in the area

The woman was taken to Eastbourne District General Hospital, and has not yet been interviewed by the police. She is believed to be from Surrey but have connections with the Heathfield area. Mill Close, the road on which the incident occurred, has been closed, according to a police spokeswoman, who said, “An investigation is now under way and the area around the scene is cordoned off.” Chief Inspector Julia Pope, Wealden district policing commander, said, “This is a very tragic incident, but I would like to reassure people that it is fully contained and there is no threat to anyone in the area. We will move to restore normality and access to Mill Close as quickly as possible.” A spokesman for the South East Coast Ambulance Service said, “We sent an ambulance and two response cars but sadly two young children were pronounced dead at the scene.”

General Motors automobile sales plunge by 45%

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

General Motors Corporation (GM) announced on Wednesday that it saw a 45% drop in United States vehicle sales for its cars in March.

Executives from several auto firms, however, said that there was some hope for the auto industry to stabilise, as car sales rebounded in the last week of March.

“The market is starting to show small signs of life which need to be nourished like seedlings,” said the vice president and chairman of Chrysler LLC Jim Press. “It’s too early to see a trend, but spring shows signs of hope.”

Other automobile manufacturers also saw their car sales slip: Chrysler and the Japanese Toyota both reported a 39% loss, whilst Ford Motor Company sales fell 41%.

Annualised sales of vehicles in the car industry in the US are predicted to have dipped below nine million in March, compared to February’s 9.12 million, which was the lowest number since 1981.

“Auto makers are pulling every lever in their effort to attract buyers, as evidenced by the new programs from Ford and GM. The typical incentive programs simply do not resonate in today’s economy,” Jesse Toprak, an analyst for Edmunds.

Ford shares gained 2.3% to a level of US$2.69 in early trading at US stock markets on Wednesday, while stocks for Toyota’s US depository increased 5.9% to $67. GM shares slipped 1.6% down to $1.92.

GM and Chrysler receive Canadian loans amid US restructuring ultimata

Friday, April 3, 2009

General Motors (GM) and Chrysler will receive bridge loans from the government of Canada and the provincial government of Ontario, however no more will be forthcoming from either Canadian or US governments unless the companies can reinvent themselves.

“This is a regrettable but necessary step to protect the Canadian economy. We are doing this on the assumption that we obviously cannot afford either in the United States or Canada a catastrophic short-term collapse.” said Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada.

“We cannot, we must not, and we will not let our auto industry simply vanish. This industry is, like no other, an emblem of the American spirit; a once and future symbol of America’s success,” said Barack Obama, President of the United States. “These companies – and this industry – must ultimately stand on their own, not as wards of the state.”

Chrysler will receive CA$1 billion and may in fact be eligible for as much as CA$4 billion. If Chrysler succeeds in the next 30 days with a restructuring plan it would be eligible for a US$6 billion loan. A part of Chrysler’s restructuring plan must include a partnership with Fiat within 30 days to appease the US administration. Fiat is a supplier of smaller fuel-efficient vehicles, and the merger will help Chrysler to be viable in the North American market. A Chrysler court bankruptcy would inevitably lead to it being sold off.

As a part of Chrysler’s restructuring plans, Tom LaSorda, the president of Chrysler announced that Canadian operations would fold if it does not receive both the US commitment of $2.3 billion of aid and a new Canadian Auto Workers CAW contract to reduce all-in costs by CA$19 per hour. As a result of this announcement Chrysler’s auto sales volume in Canada dropped 23% compared to March of 2008.

GM has until the end of May to restructure its company to receive up to CA$7.5 billion. As part of the companies restructuring, General Motor’s chief executive Rick Wagoner was replaced Sunday with Fritz Henderson, the current chief operating officer. Henderson spoke out on Tuesday that GM has submitted a restructuring plan which would close five plants, and this may be increased to meet the requirements for financial aid. He is in full compliance with Obama’s auto task force to seek bankruptcy if GM cannot negotiate with their unions, bondholders and others.

GM recently brought forward the “GM Total Confidence” program providing consumer purchase protection for customers who lose their job for economic reasons within the first two years from purchase. As a result of Chrysler’s restructuring announcement in Canada, GM’s Canadian vehicle sales volume fell only 17.3% compared to 2008, an increase from the previous month.

GM must reduce some of its legacy costs which include its pensions and union health care costs. A part of GM’s ailments arose from investing in supplying truck and SUVs during an economy of high gas prices when consumers were demanding fuel efficient vehicles.

Tony Clement, Canada’s Minister of Industry, is hoping that the CAW will support the restructuring process and re-negotiate their agreement. Whereas a United Auto Workers negotiator has said, “I don’t see how the UAW will do anything until they see what the bondholders will give up.”

The Obama administration is looking toward bankruptcy proceedings for the automakers, “as a mechanism to help them restructure quickly and emerge stronger. [It will] quickly clear away old debts that are weighing them down. What we are asking is difficult. It will require hard choices by companies. It will require unions and workers who have already made painful concessions to make even more. It will require creditors to recognise that they cannot hold out for the prospect of endless government bailouts.” said Obama.

The auto parts suppliers and IT software exporters in India have already been affected by the declining auto sales. GM and Chrysler software contracts provide US$300 to 350 million a year to vendors in India. As well these two major automakers usually award US$1 billion contracts to auto parts suppliers. “We are worried and closely watching the developments in the US to gauge the impact. The decline in auto sales in the US has already hit the order books of Indian suppliers,” said a Delhi auto parts supplier.

“Going forward, the industry will undoubtedly be smaller, but if our efforts are successful it will be viable and it will support good jobs for Canadians,” said Clements.

Betty Sutton, Ohio’s Congresswoman put forward the CARS act which provides a US$3,000 to 5,000 incentive for those who trade in their vehicle for a fuel-efficient car. “It clearly stimulates the economy, and it gets the consumer into the showroom and gets them buying again. But importantly — and this is what I particularly like about it — it really helps the environment quite a bit in two respects.” said William Clay Ford Jr., executive chairman of Ford Motor Co.

Ford Motor Company has not come forward with requests for assistance.

Since December GM and Chrysler have received US$17.4 billion government loans.

Platform Beds And Feng Shui}

Submitted by: Ben Weissman

Platform beds are those that lack a traditional box spring. They have clean lines and are very inviting. A mattress sits on top of a wooden or other type of frame, allowing for an open area under the platform or adding to the storage of the space. However, when you consider feng shui, you might be happy to learn that these platform beds make one of the best additions to your bedroom. Avoid the bulky, hard lines of a traditional mattress and instead consider the benefits that a platform bed mattress and bedroom set can offer to your space.

Why Platform Beds Matter

Platform beds fit several ways well within the scope of feng shui. They provide you with gentle curves and simpler lines. However, the bed is only one element to this space to take into consideration. When you incorporate feng shui in any type of space, you need to know how the pieces create the whole picture. In other words, the color, bedroom furniture and virtually every other item in your bedroom will play a role in the feng shui of the space.

When you incorporate good feng shui in your bedroom, you are able to promote sensual energy that is nourishing to the soul. When properly incorporated, the bedroom will be inviting, alluring and calming, while still being an exciting place to be. Here are some tips to help you to incorporate this into the space.

Remove all electronics, exercise equipment and other non-bedroom related items from the space. Another option for this is to hide your television within your bedroom furniture such as in a armoire.

Allow your bed to be easily accessed from both sides. You also want to create a complete look. Choose a master bedroom furniture set that includes two nightstands, one on either side of the bed.

Choose a solid headboard and a good quality mattress. Having the best mattress for your platform bed will add to the calming and rejuvenation of the space.

In choosing the right furniture, remember that modern platform beds are a good option, but if you want to add more feng shui to the space, focus your attention on oriental platform beds instead. These beds have more of the calming effect on the space. You will find numerous options on the market to select from, giving you plenty of choices in the color of the furniture, the design elements and even the curves and movements of the texture of the wood.

Keep in mind that the master bedroom furniture you select for this space should balance with the rest of the room. Choose those wood platform beds that incorporate skin colors in them, ranging from pale colors through rich chocolate colors, for an added feng shui benefit. You also want to incorporate quality sheets and bedding in the design since this too adds to the look and feel of the space. When you pull of these characteristics together, you will have a welcoming space ideal for restorative healing and good energy flow.

Latest trial of the One Laptop Per Child running in India; Uruguay orders 100,000 machines

Thursday, November 8, 2007

India is the latest of the countries where the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) experiment has started. Children from the village of Khairat were given the opportunity to learn how to use the XO laptop. During the last year XO was distributed to children from Arahuay in Peru, Ban Samkha in Thailand, Cardal in Uruguay and Galadima in Nigeria. The OLPC team are, in their reports on the startup of the trials, delighted with how the laptop has improved access to information and ability to carry out educational activities. Thailand’s The Nation has praised the project, describing the children as “enthusiastic” and keen to attend school with their laptops.

Recent good news for the project sees Uruguay having ordered 100,000 of the machines which are to be given to children aged six to twelve. Should all go according to plan a further 300,000 machines will be purchased by 2009 to give one to every child in the country. As the first to order, Uruguay chose the OLPC XO laptop over its rival from Intel, the Classmate PC. In parallel with the delivery of the laptops network connectivity will be provided to schools involved in the project.

Kansas Professor assaulted by angry intelligent design supporters

Tuesday, December 6, 2005

Professor Paul Mirecki, the chairman of the Religious Studies Department at the University of Kansas, was hospitalized after being assaulted by two unidentified men who made references to the class he had planned to teach in the spring. The course, entitled “Special Topics in Religion: Intelligent Design, Creationism and other Religious Mythologies” was intended to support evolution, and explore creationism as a mythology.

Professor Mirecki had left his home and was driving to breakfast when he noticed the men tailgating him in a pickup truck. He said, “I just pulled over hoping they would pass, and then they pulled up real close behind.” “They got out, and I made the mistake of getting out.”

John Calvert, managing director of the Intelligent Design Network, had previously objected to Professor Mirecki’s focus on creationism as mythology, and claimed that the religious studies professor was “labeling anybody who proposes [intelligent design] to be simply a religious nut”.

Paul Mirecki had already decided to cancel the course after he caused controversy by using the slang term “fundies” to refer to Christian Fundamentalists in an email to a student organization, the Society for Open Minded Atheists and Agnostics. Professor Mirecki has apologized for using the term, which is viewed as a slur by some conservatives.

Two-thirds of Great Barrier Reef now bleached

Tuesday, April 11, 2017

Scientists with James Cook University’s ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies studying the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Queensland, Australia, announced on Monday a second severe case of coral bleaching in just 12 months.

Aerial and underwater surveys of the reef system revealed massive stretches of coral under stress, indicated by loss of colour. The survey examined 1500 km (about 900 miles) of reef and 800 individual reef systems, and showed the reef’s middle third bleached, with its north third bleached last year.

Scientists Terry Hughes and James Kerry were responsible for the latest study. They placed the blame firmly on global warming and the stress rising temperatures places on delicate ecosystems. “The bleaching is caused by record-breaking temperatures driven by global warming,” said Hughes in a statement. “This year, 2017, we are seeing mass bleaching, even without the assistance of El Niño conditions.”

At this rate, the reef is unlikely to recover, due to the relentless damage and time frames. James Kerry says that even the fastest growing coral takes around a decade to reproduce, so two bleaching events in 12 months offer the reef no prospect of recovery.
